Glen Ticer with the AFC Fallen Firefighters Memorial

Arkansas Forestry Commission board members, staff and relatives of AFC fallen firefighters gathered at AFC Headquarters in Little Rock March 27, 2009 for the unveiling of the AFC Fallen Firefighter Memorial.

The memorial honors AFC employees who have died while fighting wildland fires. Firefighters included on the memorial are W. Virgil Ticer (died April 11, 1970), David D. Thomas (died Feb. 19, 1980), and E. Alan McElroy (died Oct. 28, 1998). Arkansas Forestry Commission Chairman Allen Bedell, State Forester John T. Shannon, and Staff Forester Robert J. McFarland served as guest speakers. Sgt. Cody Jernigan, 106th Army Band, Arkansas National Guard, played Taps, while AFC law enforcement officers presented a representative from each family with a U.S. flag.

Potlatch Corporation donated the tree slab used for the memorial that was preserved and mounted by AFC Rangers Randy Cossey and Larry Moore of Perry County. The memorial can be viewed in the lobby of the Arkansas Forestry Commission Headquarters located at 3821 West Roosevelt Road in Little Rock.
