 Law Enforcement

Unlawful dumping, timber theft, wildfire, and equipment theft and vandalism have long been problems for Arkansas’ forest landowners and loggers. The AFC has aggressively sought prosecution of violators to deter such crimes.

Arkansas Code Annotated ' 20-22-301 gives the AFC the authority to enforce the State’s laws pertaining to unlawful dumping, timber theft, forest fires, and equipment theft and vandalism.

 Fire Statistics

The AFC is responsible for the protection of 19,727,978 acres of non-federal forestland in Arkansas. Wildfires occur in every month of the year, but are most prevalent in the spring and late summer.

The AFC maintains records of all wildfires that occur each year. Wildfire reports are available from 1935 to the present except for the years 1938 and 1939. The records for these years were burned in a fire.

 Insects and Disease

The AFC provides technical assistance to landowners and communities in the prevention, detection, detection, evaluation and suppression of forest insects and diseases.

Rural Development Grant Funds

The Arkansas Forestry Commission in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the Southern Group of State Foresters announces funding available for Fiscal Year 2002 for interactions with and providing technical assistance to rural communities for sustainable rural development purposes. Priorities will be on aiding communities having a high risk or threat from wildfire. The focus will be on planning, technical, and financial assistance. This effort should build or strengthen public and private technical support networks to help communities achieve planned goals and objectives.

Training for Wildland Firefighters

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) has developed standards and set required training for all jobs listed under the Incident Command System (ICS). A person must be certified in the particular job he/she will be assigned to in order to work on a fire or other incident outside Arkansas.

The AFC conducts various NWCG training courses throughout the year. Courses may be open to persons other than Forestry Commission personnel. Other agencies and states may also conduct similar training.
